My Disney Journey

This blog was a journey of my application to Walt Disney World's Cultural Representative Program, from sorting out my CV through all the interviews to a year of having a mouse for a boss! Now, watch as I try to get back to my second home.

New Years eve eve. December 31, 2010

Today has been a pretty standard day. Work at 1:15, right through until 11pm. I started seating, and moved onto Chippie filling later on. So same as usual. Close was a bit annoying, as we had to over-stock everything due to it being New years eve tomorrow, and we’re expecting 79,000 people in Epcot! Thankfully, I’m not working!!! 😀

(For reference, Magic Kingdom has a full capacity of 100,000. That’s the moment when they stop letting anyone enter, regardless of where they got their ticket/if they’re staying in a resort. The parking lot has a capacity of 75,000, to allow for 25,000 resort guests.)

So yea, I’m going to try and get into Magic Kingdom tomorrow. This could go horribly wrong. I’m going to have to be up and out very very early, as I’ll only be allowed in during general opening, before they start restricting who can and can’t enter. Wish me luck!

I guess I should probably talk about yesterday too, as I didn’t blog. Yesterday, I wasn’t working until mid-afternoon, so Terri, Riyad and I went to Hollywood studios for a spot of lunch. We ate at Backlot Express, which was really rather yummy, and the cast there were lovely. One of the ladies though we were holiday makers! After that, Terri and I had to make our way back to Epcot (by boat! I love the friendship boats), as we both had work.

Work was as usual. I started off greeting, which is always fun, and then I was chippie filling after my break. I really didn’t want to walk back to Odyssey (staff cafeteria) during my break, and I had a change of clothes with me, so I decided it was about time I tried some of our fish and chips. So I can now officially say that I have eaten from the Yorkshire County Fish Hut!!! 😀 They’re not bad, but it’s not cod, so it is a little different from home. It’s a pretty good estimation though.

So yea, that was my last couple of days. I now have two days off, and I plan on spending one of them recouping after 8 straight days of work. Shopping, washing and resting is in order! And then, on Sunday, I’ll get my rota for my Assigner training week. 😀 Exciting times!

For now though, I should sleep. Especially if I want to get up as early as I really should to have any hope of getting into MK.

Night all,

Not so Extra Magic Hours December 29, 2010

Today started off as a lazy day. When we eventually got up, we headed over to commons as USPS said that my package from Jon had arrived! So we got to commons just to be told that they’d already transferred it back to Patterson. So we came back to Patterson!!! Picked it up, dropped it off at home, and came out again.

We came over to Epcot to pick up some food before I had to start work, and we ate in the Electric Umbrella. I have discovered the joy of Disney chicken nuggets (loads of places sell them). This is good news, as it means I know there’s going to be something I like in the kinds of quick-serve places that I could be at a loss for.

And then I headed to work. Work was the usual today, I started off on Greeting, which was good fun. I feel like I haven’t greeted in a while, and I enjoy greeting. And then, after my break, I was seating. I usually find seating a little boring, but this evening somehow went rather quickly. I did get to walk Jason over to TCR to drop money off, and I always find that fun! I’ve been over there quite a few times now, with various GTs.

I somehow got out earlier than I was expecting tonight. There might’ve been some confusion over what time chippy closed, as I was scheduled until 11:30pm to close chippy, but we were out by 11. *shrug* Ah well, not so extra after all… it goes in my favour as I got home earlier! 😀

Since I came home form work I’ve just been relaxing and chatting to Terri. I’ve opened my box, but I’ve not unwrapped any of my Christmas presents yet. I have eaten one of the Thornton’s chocolates already 😛

Tomorrow, I think we’re going to Hollywood studios in the morning, grabbing some lunch, then heading back to Epcot for work. No idea where we’ll end up eating though! Half-plans are always fun! 😛

For now, night all

Nom nom nom December 28, 2010

So, Christmas day at work was pretty good. I was chippy filling all day, which was ok, but the words “Merry Christmas” really loose all meaning when you say them 200-300 times with every order.

“There you go guys” slide tray towards guest, “Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!!!” Cheesy smile.

I stayed in a pretty decent mood though, which I think was all started by one of my very first guests who actually thanked me for working on Christmas day. Thank you very much, you lovely man! The end of the night turned into a bit of a shambles though, as the only people left to bump me out hadn’t been trained in Chippy, but they were put there anyway! I’m rather glad I wasn’t closing, although I really pity Terri who basically had to close Chippy, and train all the newbies how to close chippy, as she was the only one there who knew what she was doing!!!

Anyway, chippy was eventually closed successfully, and Terri eventually joined me round at Stuart’s flat for Christmas dinner. Stuart had offered to cook (with the aid of Dan) Christmas dinner for a group of us. This group turned into 18 people eating!!! They cooked two turkeys! Loads of veg, god knows how much gravy, and most of it went 😀 It was an amazing dinner. If you’re going to spend Christmas away from home, away from family, away from tradition… make your own tradition and have a mass Disney-family dinner!!! 😀 I actually didn’t feel home sick… although I did miss the brussel sprouts 😛

In short, Stuart and Dan did an amazing job, and I hold my hat up to them (if I had a hat!). You guys are free to cook me dinner any time you like! 😛 (Joking)

Since then, the last couple of days have been pretty normal. They’ve been utterly freezing, even colder than back in the UK (or at least, in Bristol). I was on chippy registers yesterday (boxing day), and thank god we got moved inside. It was so quiet though, we barely took 500 transactions between both tills. For information, we took over 500 on each till on Christmas eve and Christmas day. Today, I was on beer cart. The rules had been changed though… it used to be that if the temperature dropped below 45F, beer cart would get closed. This morning, the managers received an email from the Epcot management saying that this would now change to 38F. Personally, this was too cold for me. And I should know, I was stood out on beer cart today… doing roughly 40 transactions an hour, until the very second it hit 38F, when Jack (the manager) radio’d down to say close beer cart! My god, was I happy to hear this news… I think my nose might’ve dropped off otherwise!

Tomorrow, I don’t start work until 5:15, so I have the morning to relax and do some stuff. Not sure what I’m going to do, but I’m sure it’ll be fun.

So for now, I bid you good night!

Merry Christmas!!! December 25, 2010

Merry Christmas to one and all!

I must say, It’s nice to have a different type of Christmas, but it is a little strange. I’ve never had to work on Christmas day before either, so that’ll be different for me.

I’ve spoken to my boyfriend, and I’ve spoken to my parents. Everyone seems very happy and Christmassy, which is always good. 😀 Jon liked all his presents, and Stitch is now sat on his desk… I don’t think he’ll be able to get up to much, there’s enough people around to keep an eye on him!

Terri and Riyad loved their presents, and I loved my presents from them! They got me a couple of keyrings, a mug, a cupcake mix from Minnie’s Bakeshop and a book about the history of Walt Disney. I really look forward to reading that too!

Tonight I’ll be heading round to Stuart’s for Christmas dinner. I think he’s cooking for about 16 of us! It should be really good fun, even if it’s very different from usual.

I think that’s all for now. The last couple of days have been pretty usual. Last minute wrapping and shopping, work has been a mix of busy and quiet, and the weather can’t decide if it wants to be hot or cold.

But for now, Merry Christmas to everyone!

Xmas eve eve December 23, 2010

Shopping for Terri yesterday was successful! Tonight, we’re having a wrapping party, as Riyad and Terri went shopping this morning for my Christmas present. Three way shopping is so much more fun, you have a friend to bounce ideas off for the third party. 😀

As for the rest of yesterday, once we’d finished shopping and general browsing, Terri had finished work so came to meet me and Riyad in Downtown Disney. We had dinner at Planet Hollywood (yummy, but the same the world over) then went to the cinema to see Tangled. Now, I know tangled isn’t out in the UK yet, but when it comes out I urge everyone to go and see it. And that includes you, mum and dad! The music is fun (although I’ll admit not as great as Princess and the Frog), but it’s such a heart wrenching and funny film that I loved it! Riyad even started crying! (For which we teased him greatly)

Today, I’ve been working all day, and I was seating. I kept myself occupied (somehow) but the day went by as usual. I spoke to Jack again about Assigner training, and he said no one is training for a couple of weeks, then Jane will be from the 9th, so it’ll be me the week after that! 😀 I’m glad he remembered I’d asked before, as there’s quite a few people that’ve been asking about it.

Anyway, that’s about it for now. Time to get some dinner, and start wrapping these presents up!!!

Happy Holidays to everyone,

New Flat!!! :D December 22, 2010

So today I moved 😀
Yes, this was expected, no I haven’t mentioned it before now, yes I am now in Patterson, yes I now live with another UK person (Terri, you’re amazing!). Um, don’t think there’s anything else to say about it. I have more room, fewer flatmates, more peace, more buses. Generally, it’s a good move 😀
That basically means that I have nothing to blog about, as all I’ve been doing today was packing, moving, and unpacking again.

Yesterday was Chippie tills day. It was a long, simple, happy day. My voice nearly went, but drinks kept me going. My till was spot on, to the penny! And by penny I mean 1cent, not 1pence. 😛

Anyway, I think that’s all for now. Pizza is on it’s way, it was cooked by Omar, and is being delivered by Daniel. So blogging is done! Tomorrow is another day off (yay!), and I’m spending the day with Riyad, trying to buy Terri a Christmas present, so that’s going to be fun!! :)

And now the pizza has arrived! That shows just how long it’s taken to write this post. So yea, I’ll stop now.

Night guys,

uuurrrrrrrrrrgggh December 20, 2010

Being ill sucks. Snotty noses, sore throats, waking up with headches… it all sucks. One of my supervisors even commended me for my silent sneezing!

Of course, it didn’t stop me going out last night, having a fun time with some new friends, and seeing the new Tron. It’s is an ok movie, but it could’ve done and been so much more. And the ending was kind of like “oh, ok. So that’s how you want to end it then. Yea” Either way, I still had a great time!

Work has been the same old usual, although being ill does make me grumpy, and thus more susceptible to being wound up. I have discovered that there are certain characters that just grate on my nerves something awful when I’m not feeling too great. Ah well, you get them in all walks of life, why should Florida be any different? 😛

As for now, I need a decent nights sleep (unlikely when I can’t breathe!), and tomorrow I shall be on Chippie tills. Hopefully it’ll be warmer than today, I don’t think I can stand another day of this cold, when I have this cold. Grrr.

Night night

Can I holiday to Canada? December 18, 2010

Apparently I can! A guest asked me if I’d ever been, which I haven’t, so he said I should and that I could stay with him! I was only seating them, I hadn’t even spoken to the party that much! Ah, the strange things that can happen at work! 😀

Apart from that, work was as usual. I worked pretty much all day today, and although I’m feeling a little ill, it was all good. I can’t believe it took me 6 weeks to catch an American cold though! Surely the bugs must be different out here to back home? Ah well, painkillers and decongestants are already in the handbag for whenever I need them. :)

Hopefully, a long nights sleep will help me. So with that, Night night!

The UK Pavilion finally met me! December 17, 2010

So I really need to give a bit of a run down of the last few days as yesterdays blog post was far too short for it’s own good!

So, yesterday I spent the morning in Downtown Disney. I bought myself some lego (yay!) as I have been having slight withdrawal symptoms, especially as lego sets are cheaper over here, even when the exchange rate is decent! Oh, and having a lego store on my doorstep means I can get hold of all the sets that’re usually impossible to find! We grabbed lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express. A Quick Service Restaurant that brings your food to your table! It’s a lovely lovely place, and so nice. One I will certainly be heading back to. Work was as usual, apart from meeting some of the new people, as I mentioned! Hi everyone, welcome to Florida! (I found out today a few more of them read this)

Today turned out entirely different from original planning. We completely failed to get up early enough for park opening. This was probably just as well, as the time we’d planned to get there for was 9am. Magic Kingdom had Extra Magic Hours this morning, and thus opened at 8am! Either way, we ended up over at West Clock (by Disney Uni), to have a look at Cast Connection (massive discount warehouse where all the discontinued and broken stock goes, for sale to cast members). Cast Connection is just crazy! They have some amazing deals in there, including old printers from offices! Sold as seen, of course, no guarantee they actually work.

After having a browse round there (and I will be going back!), we finally made our way into MK. Didn’t really do very much, but we grabbed lunch at Columbia Harbour House which was yummy. We decided not to try and stay for Mickey’s Very Merry as we were quite tired and fancied a relaxing evening before attending our meet and greet later on. So we headed back to my place, relaxed, grabbed dinner, then headed into another flat in my building at 11:30 for the UK meet and greet.

Meet and greets are usually held for every arrival group within a couple of weeks of them getting here. For some reason, our one kept getting called off, and as such we had to wait until we’d been here 6 weeks, and the next group had arrived, before “meeting” the UK pavilion! This meant we had somewhere around about 15 people to be met, which took a little while. There’s various things and questions asked of the “new” people, but for those of you yet to come here… there is nothing to worry or be nervous about. It’s just a load of fun. You also get given your “mum and dad” who will look after you while you’re here. Thanks to Emily and Dan, who are now my parents! 😀

I’m not going to go into details about what goes on, as that will ruin the surprise for anyone coming out here… but do go to your meet and greet, they’re good fun, and it’s a great way to actually meet loads of people without it being awkward.

After we’d finished meeting everyone, everyone headed off to IHOP (International House of Pancakes) for pancakes! Or whatever took their fancy really. The menu there is so good, I will be going back at a sensible time of day for a sensible meal… probably quite a few times!

As for now, this post has gotten rather long, and I do need to go to sleep. For anyone who hasn’t met me yet, I look forward to your meet and greet… who knows, I may even end up as your mum! 😀

Sleep tight,

I hate routers December 16, 2010

I’ve just spent the last couple of hours trying to sort out someone’s router, and I’ve finally come to the conclusion that the hardware is dead. Grrrrr.
In other news, I realised today that people actually read this thing! The newbies started their on-the-job training today, and one of them asked if I was the Vikki that wrote My Disney Journey! Nathan, thank you for making me realise that this blog is for you, my readers, as much as it is a memory for me, and a way of letting my family know what I’m up to.
And on that note, I’m not going to let you know what my last couple of days were like, because I’ve spent all evening getting frustrated over a router instead! Needless to say, work is the usual, and tomorrow I’m getting up stupidly early to get to Magic Kingdom for Park opening.
See you all soon,
