My Disney Journey

This blog was a journey of my application to Walt Disney World's Cultural Representative Program, from sorting out my CV through all the interviews to a year of having a mouse for a boss! Now, watch as I try to get back to my second home.

Hat Trick February 11, 2011

Today, I’ve done a little bit of all sorts. I wanted to go to Typhoon Lagoon, but it was really too cold, so I didn’t. Instead, I opted to go to Animal Kingdom, because I haven’t been there in ages. I decided to have lunch at the Yak & Yeti Quick Service counter… had a sweet and sour chicken with rice, and it was very very yummy.

Then I basically just wandered round, had a browse, and enjoyed myself! I bought another present for Jon’s birthday, just a little token this time. Nothing actually to do with Animal Kingdom, but at this rate he’ll have a present from each park and downtown!

I eventually decided there wasn’t much more I wanted to do in AK today, so went and got a bus to Hollywood studios. There was one thing in particular I wanted in HS… and it wasn’t there. So again, I had a wander round and a bit of a browse, and found out that I should go back tomorrow morning to get what I want.

So once I’d got bored of looking round HS shops, I decided to get a hat trick and get the boat over to Epcot! Just to say hi to everyone who’s working today really. I also had a browse round MouseGear, not that there’s anything I want, but it’s always fun.

Then I came home. And now I’m just waiting for my lift out to see Rocky Horror with my Floridian friends tonight! πŸ˜€ It’s going to be so much fun!

Not much really February 10, 2011

I’ve had rather a lazy day. I think I deserved it after 9 days of work! It was a bit of a mixed bag though. I had a bit of an argument with my brother – made up with him again a little later. Spoke to my mum about stuff, that was rather nice. :) Generally chilled and did not very much!

I went out to Downtown Disney this evening. Bought another birthday present for Jon, looked at other things I might like in the future, chatted to a Lego store employee for a while, then wandered down to Paradiso 37 for dinner. I actually had a starter and a dessert, but it was easily enough food for me, and I just didn’t fancy any of the entrΓ©es. What I did have was rather yummy though – chicken quesedilla and tres leches (spelling unknown!).

And now I’m back home and ready for bed. Fingers crossed the weather will be good tomorrow as I want to go to Typhoon Lagoon. We shall see!

My head has space in it. February 9, 2011

I got up this morning and just wasn’t in the right head space for assigning. I don’t know why, I don’t think I slept well and was rather tired. But I got into work and just went “urgh”. Thankfully, Jane offered to swap shifts with me, and she would assign for the day, and the managers agreed.

And so I spent my 9th consecutive day of work doing random odd jobs, interacting with guests, seating, greeting and chippie filling. A bit of a mis-matched, everything day really! I also got to finish at 5:30, dues to the shift swap, which was a god send.

The rest of the afternoon, I’ve just been hanging out at home and relaxing. After 9 days of work, doing not much is very very appealing. Terri was on until close, but is home now, and we’re about to watch “Made of Honour” while eating dinner, before heading to bed. Sounds like the perfect evening to me!

Happy Days! February 8, 2011

I’ve been in a really good mood most of today. I wasn’t assigning, I was instead on Chippie Tills. Open until almost close, and yet the sun was shining, the weather was warm, and I was a happy little bunny!

Kathleen and Mike came to visit me too! (Friends from Florida – hey guys if you’re reading!) They were spending the day in Epcot, because they could, and decided to see if I was working, which I was! πŸ˜€ It was quiet again, and as we had two tills open, I spent about half an hour just chatting to them, along with a really nice old guy about random UK stuff!

It’s quite funny though, I gave Kathleen a hug when they left, then I served the next guest and said “It’s ok, they’re friends of mine!” in case she wondered about the hug. She replied with “Well, we’re all friends and family in Disney!” to which I offered her a hug as well! πŸ˜€ Yay for hugging total strangers! You couldn’t do that in many other jobs, that’s for sure!

As for tonight, Terri is finally home from the Hotel, and Dan heads back to the UK tomorrow, so I’ve spent it just hanging out at home with her, which has been lovely. I’ve missed having Terri at home.

Anyway, I’m back Assigning early tomorrow morning, so Time for bed.

Quiet times February 7, 2011

Short and sweet post tonight. Was Assigning again today. It was quiet again. I couldn’t even keep the servers’ sections full most of the night. Not really much else to report.

Not going to lasses, I’m rather tired. Maybe next week I’ll start going again.

Night all!

Superbowl Sunday! February 6, 2011

I have absolutely no care for sports. So I really don’t care that it’s Superbowl Sunday apart from one reason… work was quiet! And I do mean utterly dead.

If you’ve been reading my blog up until now you’ll know that I have a habit of weeding myself around 7pm. Well, today, I had walk-ins right through the night, even through 7pm, and didn’t have any problems at all. It was mental.

And that’s about all I have to say about work. Tonight, I’m going out to Parliament with a load of people. It’s a club in Downtown Orlando. I’ve been once before and had fun then, so I’m really looking forward to it! I haven’t been on a night out in quite some time, and I think I need it. πŸ˜› So now just to slap on a little bit of make-up, and we’re all good to go!

Catch you laters, my lovely readers! πŸ˜€

My time to do my thing! February 5, 2011

Only had a short shift today. And as it was rather quiet, it was made even shorter by me getting an ER! πŸ˜€ The weather was pretty yukky, very much like English rain. Really fine stuff that gets into Everything. So once I had my ER I wandered off round Epcot! The rain mostly held off while I was walking round, and I had a lovely little browse of places. Even managed to buy the first of Jon’s Birthday presents!

I grabbed myself some dinner at Yakitori House, Japan’s quick-service location. I got chatting to the loveliest of couples while I was there, about America, about the UK, about working for Disney… they were just so kind and interesting! In other news, the food was really good too! πŸ˜› I had a Chicken Terriyaki dish, which came with proper sticky Japanese rice, and some mixed veg. It was certainly value for money (by Disney standards – lol!).

By the time I came out of Japan the rain had started to chuck it down again, so I popped backstage and grabbed a cast bus back to cast services before coming home. I didn’t really feel like walking in the rain through the park to get to cast services!

And that was pretty much my day. So simple, but the time spent wandering round “the world” has perked my mood up. I’ve been in a little bit of a funk the last few days, what with Jon having gone home, and me just working all the time… I needed some time to do what I wanted. And I wanted to walk round Epcot apparently! πŸ˜›

Tomorrow, I’m assigning! It’s also Superbowl day, so it should be very quiet. Easy day, here I come!

Small World Syndrome! February 4, 2011

Terri has what she calls Small World Syndrome. She keeps knowing people who’re here by some random link back home. Today, I also had it!

I was seating for my whole shift, and during one moment I had a couple of guests come up to me, a guy and a girl. She asked me if I used to go to Uni before coming out here. I said yes, Bristol. She asked if I used to dance. I said yes. It turned out that the pair of them used to be team captains for Cardiff’s ballroom dancing team, and they were captains while I was dancing for Bristol. Bristol and Cardiff went to a lot of competitions together, and at one competition Cardiff was short of dancers, so I ended up dancing for them!!! And that was why she recognised me!

Oh, I also drew a hopscotch today!! It was a fish and chips themed one, drawn by me and Stuart. Simple, but stylish, and happened to advertise our chippie as well. How cool is that? πŸ˜›

After work I popped out for dinner with Dan (who’s here visiting Terri, and she was working). We decided on a resort in the end, as I had to pop home to get changed, and the parks would be closed by the time I was back out again. So I choose Riverside Mill at Port Orleans Riverside. Partly because it looked yummy and partly because I wanted to have a nose at the resort to see if I’d like to stay there in June when Jon visits again. πŸ˜› As it turns out, the food was very yummy, and the resort looks pretty good. Although it’s a very spread out resort, but I think that’s cool.

Anyway, it’s rather late now, and I should really be sleeping. Work again tomorrow (and for many more days yet – my fault for moving my Regular Days Off this week).

TGI… thursday? February 3, 2011

I only had a short shift today. Was chippie filling before my break, then seating after my break. Work was mostly uneventful, although I would like to say hi to the lovely lady that came to see me (I was helping fill beers on beer cart as there were no tables to seat). Whoever you are, please comment so I can say hi properly! I like it when people come and say thanks for writing this blog, and it always hits home that I’m getting a little bit internet famous! Eeek. πŸ˜›

I finished work before we closed today, so I decided to get changed and grab some dinner over in Mexico. I’m a little short on money after Jon’s visit, so I opted for their quick service – La Cantina Restaurant. It was rather yummy, although I’m not a huge fan of tortilla chips, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Tonight, once Leah gets home from work, I’ll be heading off to TGIs. Thursday seems to have become our TGI night, which should be pretty fun. Dooley still owes me cheesecake, after all! I fully intend on claiming it tonight! πŸ˜€

So for now, I bid you all adiue! And Hi again to my random lady! πŸ˜€ Please carry on reading!

7pm I hate thee! February 2, 2011

Today, I have officially been in Florida for 3 months! That’s 1/4 of my program already done (eek!), although I’ve completed more than 25% of my Restaurant Challenge, so I’m well on my way towards completion, which makes me happy. In celebration of our three month anniversary, my arrival group went for Breakfast at Trail’s End Restaurant over at Fort Wilderness Campground. This did of course mean that I had to get up at 6:30 to catch a 7:23am bus over to Fort Wilderness. Once there, we had to catch another bus to the other end of the resort where Trail’s End was located.

Breakfast was a standard Disney buffet affair, complete with Mickey Waffles! Their version of Eggs Benedict was rather yummy and interesting too (no, I’m not quite sure what was in it, so I can’t tell you!)Not all of our arrival group came along, Dawn had only just got back from Vegas quite late the night before (she’d gone to see Cher for her Birthday) and Callum slept in. Sophie met us after breakfast as we were heading to a boat to Magic Kingdom. Jen and I had to get to work quite early, so a quick hop over to MK, then monorail to the TTC and again to Epcot, and the mornings celebrations were over.

Work was pretty good today. Lunch was quite quiet, and assigning was easy. Dinner was fine, until I let in too many walk ins for around about 7pm. I need to learn that most of my 7pm reservations *will* turn up, and to start saving tables for them sooner!!! But I got out of it in the end, and everyone got sat, and everything was great.

However, I am now totally knackered by both the early morning and the long day of assigning. So I shall bid you all night night, and sleep well!

Until tomorrow,
