My Disney Journey

This blog was a journey of my application to Walt Disney World's Cultural Representative Program, from sorting out my CV through all the interviews to a year of having a mouse for a boss! Now, watch as I try to get back to my second home.

Rain, rain, go away… March 31, 2011

…come again on a non-training day!!!

It rained pretty much all day again today. I was training Chippie open and filling with Jessie. She picked things up really quick, which was great, as it was mostly a verbal training day, and very little actual doing of stuff. Which, of course, is very annoying, and is all due to the rain. Rain makes the park very very quiet. We did, at least, get to do some stuff, which is more than can be said for Holly’s trainees. They were am seaters, and were meant to train on opening and doing beer cart today. Of course, when it rains, beer cart doesn’t open. So that’s going to prove interesting when they pick up a beer cart shift from CDS!!!

So anyway, training went pretty well, I think we covered more random stuff than if it hadn’t been raining, but slightly less condiment related things, and filling things. She seems to be a multitasker anyway though, so she’ll hopefully be fine with it.

So yea, my trainees shift finished at 5:45, but I was still scheduled until 9. How crazy is that? I’d put in for an ER to finish at the same time, but Yelitza said no, claiming I was one of the closers. This was a little crazy, as there were enough people scheduled to include Beer cart, which wasn’t open. So I carried on filling in Chippie, watching James train Chris on tills, and did random stuff to waste time. Then I gave up and asked Yelitza if we could close one side, which I then did, with the help of Paul, who was tasking. Tasking!!! That shows how many spare people we had around if Paul was tasking. It was nonsense.

But it was all well in the end. Once one side of Chippie was closed, I walked Kista over to the money room to drop bags, and then I finally got my ER at ten to eight. Better late than never, eh?

Then I came home, ate dinner, and have spent a lovely evening curled up with Peter Pan! 😀 I haven’t seen that film in years, it’s an awesome film!

And now, for bed. Possibly a little reading before sleep… I have got tomorrow off, after all!

Does anyone talk in this place? March 30, 2011

Today has been another odd day. I went into work at 1:45, thinking I had a class between 2:45 and 3:45. So I was put on chippie tills, card only for a bit. Then I got told my class was canceled, and not to worry about going anywhere. Then, at about 3, I was told the class was still on, and to get over there.

So james and I made our way to the land, where the class was being held, just to find some girls doing some e-learning, and that the man holding the class had left. We tried to just do the e-learning, but we needed a code to log on. So we came back to the UK, just to be told that our class was, in fact, going to be re-scheduled.

By this time, the assigner was due a break, so I took over assigning. All was well until the heavens opened. Podium got moved inside, tables got moved around due to the awning leading, and everything went rather mental for a bit. Thankfully, we were just about under control again when the assigner came back.

So I was bumped to seater. I seated for a while, then wondered what was happening with my break. I went to ask the coordinator, who told me she thought I’d already taken my break. *sigh* Clearly, I hadn’t, so I took it then. By the time I came back, podium had been moved back outside. Although it had brightened up, it was obviously going to rain again before the night was out.

Sure enough, it rained again, and we moved podium back inside again. And then I had to take Sabrina’s trainees and train them on Magic moment, as she’d never done it before. So that was fine, but then Sabrina didn’t know what else she was meant to be training them at the end of the night, and there was a whole confusion thing about closing podium and who was meant to do it, and I just got frustrated, and I seem to be the only person who knows what plugs in where, and arrrrrrrgh.

So anyway, I left at 9:15, when I was meant to, having told everyone what they were and weren’t meant to be doing. And having gotten fed up of it all.

So now I’m sat on the bus, on my way home, listening to some Pink Floyd, writing this blog post from my phone. I think Terri mentioned Chinese and inviting Riyad over, which will be awesome. I feel like we haven’t hung out, the three of us, in ages. Oh, and it’s still raining, and the bus is trying to drip on me. Yay. 😐

Free dinner ftw. March 29, 2011

Today was a pretty simple day. I was training jenny on her 2nd day of chippie tills. Jenny pretty much had everything covered, so I didn’t have a lot to really train. So my day consisted of interacting with guests, the odd bit of chippie filling, and keeping an eye on the condiments.

We didn’t get out until quite late as Jenny hadn’t done her training books on her first till day, so we had to do some books at the end of our shift. Thankfully, I got back to Patterson before the Italian event thing had finished, so I still got myself a free dinner!

And now I’m sat with Jane and Terri, having a natter about life. Think I’ll be heading to sleep soon though.

Back to Lasses… March 28, 2011

Today it rained.
And rained
And rained
And rained

And rained.

I was Assigning. It was quiet.

Tonight, I got dragged to Lasses by Terri because she was getting her T-shirt. It hasn’t really changed that much, and I’m still not inclined to go again, but we’ll see.

I’m not in until late tomorrow – training chippie tills – so I think I’m going to read a bit, then sleep.

Girlie night, boys, and chocolate! March 27, 2011

I had a very disjointed day at work today. Started off by seating, then got bumped out to run away to my train the trainer class, then came back to break the assigner and then I finished! 😀 I spoke with Yelitza about my pre-service test while I was assigning (it was quiet, so I could). She basically went through what I missed off the test, we chatted about general menu stuff, and I somehow gained my extra 2.5 points during this chat! So I’ll start food running on April 17th!

So, the train the trainer class was awesome. Had some computer based learning to start with, then had a team class with a whole load of really lovely people. It wasn’t location based learning, it was all about how to teach things in different ways, regardless of what you’re actually trying to teach them. I think it’ll be useful knowledge for future jobs too, so yay CV point! 😀

Anyway, after work I came home and chilled out. I’ve been doing a fair bit recently, so yesterday and this evenings time just spent relaxing has been much needed. And now I’ve got Terri and Jane, and we’re having a girly PJ night, talking about boys and eating chocolate and sweets.

And now I’m going, girliness is calling!!!

Day of Fail March 26, 2011

So I failed my pre-service test. By two and a half points. If only I had learnt my coffees!!! Yelitza (the manager) is going to be asking me a question tomorrow, and if I get it right, that’ll be my 2.5 points redeemed, and all will be well, but it’s highly frustrating. I didn’t even think about coffees! Ah well.

In other news, I also failed to sort out the postage to Jon’s birthday present, due to my phone bill getting automatically paid. So I, again, have to wait until payday, which I’m really annoyed at myself for as this should’ve been posted weeks ago. It was his birthday last Wednesday after all!!! Grrr.

Ah yes, I’ve also not done my washing today (as planned) or any cooking for the week (also as planned) and as such today has generally been a bit fail. Terri dragged me out to Panera Bread when she got home from work, which perked me up though, and then I went for a swim in the pool this evening. Met a guy called Teddy, who was a bit of a laugh, and now I’m going to sleep.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow’s question. Night

Open ’till Close on EMH. March 25, 2011

Not much to report today as I was Assigning all day. Lots of big tables again, mostly walk ins. Not too many big reservations. I felt like my brain wasn’t screwed in properly though, possibly due to not having assigning for a while. I took my pre-service test in my break, not sure how it went and I won’t know result until tomorrow, which is rather annoying. So I eventually came home, very tired. Tests and assigning make for a cranky, achey, Vikki. So I took a bubble bath. I feel a bit better now, but sleep will hopefully do the trick. That and a day off tomorrow (yay!).

Miss match my life March 24, 2011

I opened Greeter today! Not done that in a while. Then I moved to chippie. Got my 15min break from Terri and went back to Chippie. I do miss chippie, it’s good fun in there! I got my bumpout from Ben at 4:30. – he wasn’t impressed, and told me not to gloat about my early finish (scheduled, not ER’d!) I turned round and said I’ll gloat all I like… having extended yesterday and extra magic assigning tomorrow, I was quite looking forward to my early finish! So I made my way to the Polynesian (after some deliberating over where I could eat dinner). I’d decided upon Kona cafe, and it was very yummy indeed. They have a set menu deal, which worked out very good value, and I even ate all three courses! (I was hungry). During dinner, I made notes on our menu, trying to see how much I could remember. Seems it’s a fair bit, but not enough just yet. Then I got bus to DownTown Disney. I was thinking I might go to the cinema, but when I got there, I didn’t feel like sitting in a dark room for a couple of hours, so I browsed the shops for a bit instead (bought some stuff from Little Miss Matched!). Terri had earlier mentioned wanting to eat at TGIs tonight, so I was planning on getting the F bus just to crossroads to meet her there, but she changed her mind so I came home instead. All in all, a very pleasant afternoon, and I really enjoyed myself!

Why wouldn’t I extend? March 23, 2011

Very basic day today. I seated from when I started at 11:45. I took my 15min break, then came back to break the assigner. While assigning, I got asked if I would extend until 9pm. I said yes, so got another 45min break. Then I went in chippy for very small time, before getting bumped back to seater. And now I’m home and tired. So off to bed for me.

Room covered in Paper! March 22, 2011

Not much to say about today. I Seated, had my break, broke the assigner then came home. I had a bit of a shock when I got in. Terri has had today off, and between us, we want me to take my pre-service test on Friday. This involves me learning the entire menu. Terri has written up the whole menu, item by item, and put notes all around our room! She’s even written up a learning plan for the next few days. So while we were going over stuff and working out what I still needed to learn, we baked a cake (because we could). Pictures of these notes, covering my room, will appear shortly.
